The first fleet of the revolutionary 787 aircraft has been deliverd to All Nippon Airways, and scheduled revenue flights started between Tokyo and Hiroshima ,-and Okayama on November 1.

Komy Co., Ltd. has participated in the 787 program from the beginning. Over 100 KomyMirrors are installed in the overhead bins of each aircraft. KomyMirrors facilitate security checks and prevent passengers from leaving their belongings when they disembark the aircraft.

Boeing has received orders for 821 Dreamliners as of November 2011, and KomyMirrors are standard furnishings on all Boeing 787 aircraft.

OEM suppliers for the 787 model are required to minimize the weight of any product and Komy successfully developed the lightest -weight mirror which is only 36 grams each.

KomyMirrors are installed on aircraft operated by more than 40 major airlines worldwide. Over 120,000 FF mirrors are in use, and not one single claim has ever been made to the quality of KomyMirrors.

I was able to find that my cellphone, which I keep in my overcoat pocket, had slipped out in the overhead bin as I could see it in the mirror.I often fly for my business trips. I put my phone in my coat, and when I left the airplane,
I noticed that my phone was not in my pocket. I hastily went back to the cabin and searched for my phone with my hand, and noticed that there was a mirror that reflected all over the inside of the bin, and saw that my phone was there.

Over 100,000 Komy mirrors have been delivered since 1997, giving service to airlines and other customers. There has not been a single claim from any customer! Komy is the sole manufacturer of flat, wide angle ultralight mirrors in the world.

Most mirrors are installed in overhead bins to prevent passengers from accidentally leaving their belongings behind, and to shorten cabin inspection time for an aircraft turnaround. The flat wide angle mirrors are used in cabin overhead bins by Continental, Singapore, Lufthansa, Emirates, Cathay Pacific, and other airlines.

Komy mirrors are installed in the Airbus 380, and 30 A380 aircrafts have installed them since 2004. The first Boeing 787s are scheduled to deliver in the first quarter of next year with Komy mirrors.

Convenient!!! We used to step on passenger seats to check overhead bins!!!!

Center:Humbert CEO(at the time) at Excutive Forum 2005 in Japan(Left: Watanabe Right: Komiyama)

Why is a mirror installed in the overhead bins? I asked the cabin crew at Singapore Airlines when I was a passenger. This was her answer.

Having worked in business development for Komy Mirror since 2003, I had looked forward to seeing mirrors installed on the world's largest passenger plane, the A380, for over 6 years. The A380 began its inauguration flight in 2007 at Singapore Airlines, but I didn’t take my first flight on an A380 until August 2009. I was very curious to learn how airlines and passengers were using our mirrors in the years since the inauguration flight.

While I was looking for my seat on the upper deck, I confirmed that the mirrors were correctly installed, providing coverage for the entire bin, which gave me assurance that the mirror is useful for passengers as well as the cabin crew. I sat in my seat, and the plane took off.

I was eager to know if the mirror is really helping the passenger and cabin crew, I asked one of cabin crew why there was a mirror installed in the overhead bin, as if I knew nothing.

The cabin crew responded that the mirror is for passengers to be able to see all over the bin, without missing a corner. "The A380 provides good service! " she commented proudly.

I then disclosed to her that I was working at the company that makes the mirrors, and was so pleased that our product is supporting your services.

How useful is our product?

A380 Overhead Stowage Bin

“We had long thought that mirrors in the overhead bin would be useful, so we were very pleased when the mirrors were installed. It is so convenient to avoid leaving articles behind, and to speed up security checks. We are no longer stepping on the passenger seat to peek in the bin.” I had an honest opinion from a front line person that had reaffirmed our conviction of contributing to the passengers and cabin attendants.

We will continue to expand our product’s application for convenience and security in future.

The newly introduced mirror is labeled with the words "Please check your belongings". for passengers. Turkish Airlines, V Australia and Skymark have placed orders for the mirrors. Because of the print, it helps passengers avoid leaving behind their belonging than before.

Background

In 1996, during development of the KomyMirror, we mentioned our idea to a friend of ours, and he responded that it was a great idea! He told me that his wife always touched the bottom of overhead bin with her hand to make sure that she did not leave anything behind. His comments encouraged our R&D and gave us confidence to develop this product as a tool for preventing passengers from leave their belongings behind.

In 1998, Japan Airline selected the KomyMirror for installation on JAL's 100th B747! But we were disappointed when a former classmate and successful businessman a little, Mr. Hirota, who flew on JAL's B747 with KomyMirrors installed to Beijing, told us that passengers did not recognize the purpose of the strange mirror in the bin for what it was.

In 1999, we continued to receive small orders from airlines worldwide, even though passengers were apparently unaware of the purpose. Finally, we learned why Scandinavian Airlines explained that they had installed the KomyMirror mainly for explosive inspections...not intended for passengers! We learned that the KomyMirror was making cabin inspection efficient and shortening the turn-around time of aircraft at the gate.

In 2007, we often heard from passengers and worldwide users that the KomyMirror was "useful and convenient", or that they have avoided losing their keys, but we still believed that many people were unaware of what the KomyMirror is for. We suggested to airlines that text should be added to the FF mirror to indicate its purpose.

In 2008, KomyMirror, with text to remind passengers to "please check your belongings", were installed on Vaustralia and others. Passengers began to recognize the usefulness and function of the KomyMirror.

The flat wide angle view mirror will be installed on EasyJet (British) A320. The prime purpose of the mirror is to enable flight attendants -- regardless of where they are seated -- to monitor that all passengers remain seated per the captain's request during turbulence, take off and landing.
